I have parkinson disease and have this chronic pain in my neck and back every day. My medical doctor prescribed pain pills, but i hesitate to take them because i'm afraid of becoming addicted. Has anyone else been dealing with this nagging pain? Does anyone have a suggestion of how i can relieve this pain? So far no one i ask has ever been bothered with this. Please help.

I am a neurologist treating Parkinson disease patients on a daily basis. Neck and back pain occurs due to a variety of causes, and the physician's job is to try and establish the cause. Many times, it is because of physical stress and strain, together with poor postural reflexes which is part of PD. This is one of the less serious causes, though the pain can be excruciating and incapacitating. The point I wish to make is that in this situation, one need not be worried about some serious underlying cause, and should go ahead and use some measure to relieve pain, of which pain pills are just one option. Physiotherapists and pain clinic therapists can use a variety of devices and methods to relieve pain of this type, including ultrasound, IFT, bio-feedback, acupressure and so on. There are many new devices available, one of them being an implant which delivers analgesics at the site of pain or in the spinal canal. So, there is enough technology to aid people with such pain, and you need not despair. You should first see your doctor to confirm that there is no serious cause for the back pain, and then probably get a referral to a pain clinic.

Yes Dollyi have a terrible time with both neck and upper backspasms. I also will tell you before being diagnosed withparkinson i was disable at work with an overuse injury in my neck upper arms back etc. So its hard to say which comes first the cart or the horse.
Anyway my neck tightens right up, sholder blades are ono fire etc.
I see a trigger point therapist for this and it helps a lot. Some of physical therapist, some are massage therapist, some are Chriopractors. Trick is finding a good one you just have to ask around and see. but trigger poin therapy is pretty guueling a first if done right. But you feel better in the long run.. If thepainis too much i usual take a muscle relaxer first and if that doesnt do it a vicodin or whatever and usually that gets me through.

My dad has terrible neck and back pain also. His dr. did not want to give him a muscle relaxer because he said that would just make his head and shoulders slump down more, instead he gave him some medicine to help him sleep. He looks a lot better since he has been getting more night time sleep, but his back and neck still hurt. He has been on Stalevo for a month now and can't really tell any difference in his ET or Parkinson symptoms. The good thing is he hasn't had any of the nasty side effects,so he is continuing the Stalevo for a while longer.
I have ET also, I am not taking any meds yet. It seems like when my dad started taking meds years ago, he got worse. We don't know if that was coincidental or partly because of the meds. His head started shaking in his early 30s, mine late 30s. His hands didn't start shaking till late 50s, around the time he started inderol, it did lesson the shaking of the head, but his hands got so bad he couldn't hold anything, now he has signs of Parkinsons, he's in his early 70s, hunched over, cant lift his head very high, drooling, and some stumbling plus he has chronic neck and back pain. I hate it because he can't do the things he use to, he loved playing golf, he and my mom live on the golf course, for goodness sake, but he was able to still enjoy going here and there and talking and laughing with his family but now he can't even enjoy that because of the pain... Im going to keep checking back here to see if anybody has had any luck with a particular treatment.
