Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injection therapy has become the standard of care for focal dystonia and other neurologic disorders. However, physicians and other health care professionals are often challenged to answer their patients' questions about this therapy. WE MOVE routinely polls visitors to its website. Recently, 252 people living with dystonia or spasticity were surveyed regarding their understanding of basic terminology related to BoNT therapy. Although survey respondents were overwhelmingly confident in their knowledge, they demonstrated an astounding inability to recognize correct definitions of basic terms related to BoNT therapy.
To enhance understanding of BoNT therapy and assist health care professionals in educating their patients, WE MOVE has developed a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) written specifically for people living with movement disorders and their families and caregivers.
The information, explained in clear and easy-to-understand language, addresses these frequently asked questions:
What is BoNT? How does BoNT work in movement disorders? Are there different types of BoNT? What are the differences? Are BoNT injections safe? How long do the effects of BoNT Last? What is the role of antibodies in BoNT treatment? What should I tell my doctor when I have BoNT injections?
