does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with or help resolve my spouse's constant moaning? it is really annoying and I think that it is a reflex or something, but he cannot talk enough for me to understand why he continously does it.

Jeanette how long has your husband had PSP.My husband is 74 years old and was dx PSP 6 years ago this month. He has progressed rapidley over the past 2 months. choking with lots of difficulty with swallowing, completely wheel chair bound. Oh yes, he moans all the time...He has for last 2or3 years but has gotten much worse. This is simply part of the diease process.I feel that if I here him at least I know he's breathing. To understand with this horrific diease they choke, cough and aspirated because the brain has difficulty getting the message to the throat to swallow. Hench Neurological.. He groans because of the increase in salvia and trying to clear his throat. Imagine how annoying it is for him! Have you tried getting a suction machine it really does help!

My mom moans when she wants something. The challenge is trying to figure out what it is. She also moaned constantly when she slipped into her advanced stage which coincided with an infection she had. There is a pill and/or a patch you put behind the ear to control the saliva but it wasn't given to my mom until she went on hospice/pallative care. She coughs occasionally and sometimes clears her throat but is keeping up with the swallowing for the most part and we may have to suction her once or twice a week vice 2-3 times an hour before she started the patch.
