Other Techniques Available to Treat Restless Legs Syndrome

There have been some anecdotal reports in the literature indicating that a pain control method known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation or "TENS" may deliver significant improvement in some individuals with restless legs syndrome. However, others report no significant benefit.

During transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, electrodes are placed on the skin and attached via wires to a stimulator; low-voltage electrical impulses are then applied to certain nerve endings to help block transmission of pain signals to the brain. The procedure is considered non-addictive and causes no known side effects. However, it is important to note that the procedure is contraindicated in patients with certain types of cardiac pacemakers.
