Drug Therapy for Children
When possible, pharmacologic therapy is avoided in children with restless legs syndrome. Physicians may suggest lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, appropriate sleep routines, and diet adjustments (e.g., avoidance of any caffeine-containing products). If these interventions are not effective, physicians may prescribe appropriately adjusted dosages of clonidine or carbidopa/levodopa. In fact, in some children with RLS and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, such medications may effectively treat symptoms of both disorders.
